Starting the year off right: US paper, board output in January of 6.8 million tons is up from December and year-ago levels
2010-03-08
US paper and board output in January easily surpassed its monthly level on a year-over-year basis and at 6.8 million tons was up sequentially from December‘s level of 6.7 million tons. While output increased 1.7% and 113,000 tons sequentially from December, the 6.8 million tons produced in January far exceeded the 6.4 million tons produced in the year-ago period - one of the lowest monthly totals for 2009, according to figures from the American Forest & Paper Assn (AF&PA). In late 2008 and into early 2009, output at US paper/board mills was severely curtailed when a global recession socked paper and board demand. In January, output of major US grades was up year-over-year but some grades were flat or down compared with December levels. Only two grades had reduced output in January 2010 compared with the year earlier period: Newsprint was down 10.3% while bleached paperboard was down 4.2%. Printing & writing grades were up 8.9% in January year-over-year. Uncoated mechanical grades increased 28.3%, while total coated paper grades were up 14.6%. Compared with December, newsprint output of 304,000 tons was down 5.6%. |
