FOEX‘s European pulp indices stabilize, RCP and packaging indices up; graphic paper mixed
2010-05-06
FOEX‘s European pulp indices rose this week, albeit at significantly slower pace. Euro-based northern bleached softwood kraft (NBSK) pulp and dollar-based NBSK inched up only marginally. Both the euro-based and dollar-based prices for bleached hardwood kraft pulp decreased somewhat. FOEX stated that although the pulp market remains tight, the pressure appears to decrease. Most of the Chilean mills affected by the earthquake in February are running again and ramping up their production, but production losses continue. The OCC and ONP/OMG indices have climbed a bit, as supply on this market is also relatively tight. But even here, the worst seems to be over, and the demand from Asia, and especially China, diminished in April. Meanwhile, on the graphic paper side, newsprint levels edged down this week, and the strengthening of the euro against the weighted basket of non-EMU currencies resulted in a downward pull. Other grades continued climbing. On the packaging front, all indices once again moved up this week, with the price for testliner 2 increasing the most, by Euro 6.66/tonne.
